Diversity and Inclusion in the Board Room

Diversity and inclusion are becoming more common in boardrooms, C-suites and executive suites around the world. They’ve gone from being merely buzzwords or pledges to reality.

These meetings could be focused on the company, but it is important to remember that the decisions made there affect everyone, from employees to shareholders to the economy. In this regard, these meetings are typically very well-organized and follow an established set of rules (such as Robert’s Rules of Order) and protocols that ensure the meeting is conducted appropriately.

Boardrooms are designed to accommodate a smaller group of people, generally accommodating between 8 and 20 people around a central table that allows face-to-face discussion and fosters the feeling of unity. Furniture that is of high-quality, as well in technology, such as video teleconferencing feature and modern audiovisual systems, can create the right atmosphere necessary for productive collaboration.

Discussion boards are an effective method to engage students in discussions that extend beyond the classroom and help students to understand how different perspectives are connected to the learning process in the classroom. To encourage participation from students, instructors can start by asking icebreakers to help students become familiar with their classmates and their responses. For instance, Speer at Wichita State asks her students to introduce themselves by creating an emoji chain which explain their character and interests. Students are asked to read the responses of their peers and then reply. Highlighting a discussion’s the most important ideas and themes inspires students to keep track of the entire forum.
